Hockey Day Minnesota 2026 Came to Hastings — And It Was Absolutely Brutal (in the Best Way)
TLDR
- Hastings hosted the 20th annual Hockey Day Minnesota from January 17–24, 2026
- The main games were played at United Heroes League’s outdoor rink at the Tradition Veterans Complex
- Friday night featured an AHL outdoor game — Iowa Wild vs. Milwaukee Admirals — in −32°F wind chills
- Hastings girls hockey beat Park of Cottage Grove 2–1 on Saturday
- The event raised money for United Heroes League (military families) and Hastings Hockey Boosters
- Spiral Brewery made a special beer called “Hockey Day Haze-tings” because of course they did
If you weren’t in Hastings the last week of January, you missed one of the coolest — and we mean that literally — community events the South Metro has ever hosted.
Hockey Day Minnesota 2026 landed right here in our backyard, and Hastings absolutely showed up for it.
What Is Hockey Day Minnesota?
For those who aren’t familiar, Hockey Day Minnesota is an annual statewide celebration of outdoor hockey. It’s been running for 20 years now, and each year a different Minnesota community gets to host. Think of it as the Super Bowl of Minnesota high school and community hockey — outdoor games, TV broadcasts, and an entire week of hockey culture.
For 2026, that host community was Hastings.
The whole thing was a collaboration between United Heroes League, the City of Hastings, Hastings Hockey Boosters, and the Minnesota Wild. And it wasn’t just a one-day deal. Local games, events, food vendors, music, and family activities ran from January 17 all the way through January 24.
The Games
The marquee action was spread across Friday and Saturday at United Heroes League’s refrigerated outdoor rink at the Tradition Veterans Complex just outside Hastings.
Friday, January 23 — AHL Outdoor Game
The Iowa Wild took on the Milwaukee Admirals in an American Hockey League outdoor game. This was the pro-level headliner — a legit AHL matchup played outside on a regulation rink in rural Hastings, broadcast on FloSports. It was a pretty big deal for a town our size.
Oh, and it was played in wind chills around −32°F. More on that in a minute.
Saturday, January 24 — High School Games
Saturday’s lineup was packed:
- 9:30 a.m. — Hastings vs. Park of Cottage Grove (girls varsity). Hastings won 2–1. Home team gets the W on the big stage.
- 1:00 p.m. — Hastings vs. East Ridge (boys varsity)
- 4:30 p.m. — Rock Ridge vs. St. Thomas Academy (boys varsity)
- 7:30 p.m. — Hastings alumni girls family skate
And if you’re a Wild fan, the evening capstone was the Minnesota Wild vs. Florida Panthers at Grand Casino Arena in St. Paul — the NHL’s contribution to Hockey Day.
About That Weather
Yeah. It was cold. Like, dangerously cold.
An extreme cold warning was in effect for the Hastings area during the Friday night AHL game. Wind chills dropped to around −32°F at game time. The kind of cold where your eyelashes freeze together and your phone dies in your pocket.
But this is Minnesota. The games went on. Conditions improved slightly by Saturday, though it was still well below zero. And honestly? The brutal cold became part of the story. Twenty years from now, everyone who was there will be telling people about watching outdoor hockey in −32.
That’s the most Minnesota thing imaginable.
The Community Side
Hockey Day wasn’t just about the games. Hastings went all in:
- Spiral Brewery created a limited-edition beer called “Hockey Day Haze-tings.” The name alone deserves an award.
- A new hockey mural went up at the Hastings Civic Arena celebrating the town’s hockey history.
- United Heroes League upgraded its campus and rink amenities to handle the crowds and broadcast infrastructure needed for a statewide TV event.
- Local businesses ran extended hours and “come watch hockey” promos throughout the week, turning the whole town into a hockey festival.
- Food vendors, music, and family activities surrounded the rink all week long.
The Hastings Journal called it a "once-in-a-lifetime opportunity" for the community, and it’s hard to argue with that. This kind of event doesn’t come to a town twice.
Why It Matters Beyond Hockey
Here’s the part that makes this bigger than sports.
United Heroes League — the organization whose rink hosted the whole thing — exists to serve military families. Their Tradition Veterans Complex in Hastings is built around that mission. Net proceeds from Hockey Day 2026 were slated to go back to United Heroes League and the Hastings Hockey Boosters, directly supporting military families and local youth hockey.
So every ticket sold, every Hockey Day Haze-tings poured, every person who showed up in −32°F wind chills — they were all contributing to something that goes way beyond a hockey game.
For a community like Hastings that sits right in the heart of the South Metro, hosting Hockey Day was both a celebration and a statement: this town can pull off something big.
The Bottom Line
Hockey Day Minnesota 2026 was the kind of event that defines a community for years. Hastings got the spotlight, and they delivered — despite weather that would’ve shut down most of the country.
If you were there, you’ve got a story for life. If you missed it, well... you can always tell people you were there anyway. We won’t judge.
